ORGAN ISATION

ENTIRE human organs grown in the laboratory have been successfully transplanted for the first time, paving the way for a new era of "spare part" medicine.
The tissue was created by taking a small sample of bladder from a patient and growing muscle and bladder cells in a nutrient bath. The cells were then encouraged to grow over a biodegradable bladder-shaped scaffold made of collagen. After a further two months, the full organ had formed, ready for transplantation.

Scientists, marveling at how animals like salamanders regenerate lost limbs, have long toyed with the futuristic possibilities of regrowing worn-out or injured human parts. These developments go a long way towards giving paltalkers such as the famous Vic Ferrari, BruteLogic and ArchieBunker new hope for the future. Perhaps one day science will be able to regenerate the brain cells so tragically destroyed during their slide back into the primordial soup.
